What is a Brake Shoe?

The brake shoe is a curved piece of metal with a high-friction material (the brake lining) attached to the outside of it. It is attached to the backing plate inside the brake drum with a series of springs and levers and rests against the wheel cylinder.

What is the Purpose?

The purpose of a brake shoe is to produce the friction needed to slow down and stop a car. It has a curved steel finish on one side and an abrasive lining material. They are a much cheaper option than brake pads (ours are the cheapest available) abut use a general material so we advise you to replace your brake shoes in multiple sets to ensure even wear.

A worn or damaged brake shoe is a safety risk to yourself and other road users. We recommend a replacement every 50,000 miles. We stock high-quality brakes shoes which are Warrior branded but compatible with Knott, Alko, and BPW.

Why Should I Change My Brake Shoes?

One way a brake shoe can be affected is through heat generation which effects braking performance. If the brakes are subjected to a long period of harsh breaking the heat generated can cause them to expand meaning the brake shoes have to be pressed further outwards to stop the vehicle.

Brake shoes can also be susceptible to water as if water gets into the brakes it can become compressed between the brake shoes and the inside of the brake drum. This also affects the length of time it takes for the vehicle to stop.

To avoid this, we recommend regularly changing your brake shoes every 50,000 miles. Our affordable and reliable brake shoes and a perfect option as you will receive two sets of brake shoes and c/w springs for a very competitive price.
