6 Essential Tools That Need To Be In Your Toolbox

It is highly likely that you have a hammer somewhere in your personal collection of random stuff, but that is just the beginning. These 6 tools are an absolute must-have for household projects or repairs. If you have a passion for tools or simply need to stock a basic toolbox, here are our top 6 recommended products to get the job done. How many do you have in your toolbox?

1 – Phillips Screwdriver

A Phillips or X-shaped screwdriver is one of the most popular tools which you can find in any toolbox. The beneficial aspect of this screwdriver is that it is accurate as the ‘X’ design will not slip out of the X-slotted screw. Instead, it will grip the screw firmly in the centre, provided the screw is of a suitable size.

You can buy a Phillips screwdriver in a range of sizes and we recommend having at least two sizes if you’re an avid DIYer.

2 – Level

Have you ever looked at a shelf and it just looks wrong? It’s not quite level and your belongings don’t quite sit right. It only takes one slight error for an object to look off balanced. This tool will help you avoid this.

Some people are good at eyeballing whether something is horizontal or not, but for those who don’t have this talent (or those who prefer the easy way), this tool takes all the guestimation away. A level contains a bubble of air inside a vial of encased liquid which shows when its frame is exactly horizontal. Builders typically use longer levels, we have a heavy duty 24-inch level available, however, for a DIYer or occasional builder, we recommend a 9-inch level.

Top Tip: If you get extra air bubbles in one of the vials, just lightly tap the level and you’ll just get the one.

3 – Utility Knife

From breaking down cardboard boxes, cutting drywall, and even trimming the edges of carpet, there is a multitude of uses for a utility knife; you’ll be surprised how you got by without one.

Retractable utility knives with snap off blades are ideal and a must have in your toolbox. The thin blades are likely to get dull quickly, so you can simply snap off worn sections as you go (providing you equip yourself with pliers and safety goggles). We offer our customers a Folding Lock Back Utility Knife With 5 Spare Blade which is perfect for the benefit specified above.

4 – Pliers

Another must-have tool is the jagged jaws of pliers which support you in firmly holding objects, as well as with pulling, pinching or bending metal. While there are several variations, ranging from long-nose pliers designed to grip tiny wires to expandable pump pliers made for gripping, we recommend our CHANNELLOCK Griplock T & G Pliers. This all-purpose tool can grip, bend, twist and turn wires, and open stubborn lids.

Top Tip: Choose a set of pliers with at least a 2.5-inch (6 centimetres) gap between the handles when closed. This will prevent your palm or fingers from being pinched when using the tool.

5 – Hammer

A committed DIYer or builder needs at least one hammer. Lucky for you, there is a wide variety to choose from, and we offer a good range of hammers for you.  However, unless you’re a serious hobbyist or a professional woodworker, you can use any variation to get the job done.

For instance, an anti-vibration hammer has a tuning fork hidden within its padded handle to reduce vibration. A hammer with a magnetized head is equally as useful. This version makes it easier to start hammering a nail without hurting your fingers in the process. We recommend our Tubular Steel Claw Hammer 8 Oz. It is a highly affordable option, as are all our products, and is currently on sale.

Top Tip: Consider the face of the hammer; a smooth face with help prevent marks on surfaces, while a textured face will offer you traction when hammering nails.

6 – Wrench

This irreplaceable tool is often used to loosen or tighten nuts and bolts. There are several different types of wrenches, but we think the adjustable crescent wrench is ideal for your toolbox.

The adjustable crescent wrench is a unique product because of its adjustable jaws. Due to the run of a dial in the handle, one side of the jaws can expand or contract. This allows its user to make the wrench the exact size they prefer. This is highly advantageous because it means you can have one adjustable wrench in your toolbox instead of a number of wrenches that are of various sizes and take up valuable space. We recommend our 10″ Power Grip Adjustable Wrench which is perfect for getting the job done.
